Server discovering as unknown or won't get past validate step

I'm in the process of discovering our window servers in SolarWinds. I have several coming in as unknown or won't get past the validate step. Other than checking the firewall rules and make sure snmp or wmi is running on them what else do I need to take a look at?

You'll want to make sure that you can get to those devices from the server where SolarWinds is installed because ultimately that's all that matters, right? You can download a copy of SolarWinds' Engineer Toolset and use its MIB Walk utility to try and query the device via SNMP and/or you could use the built-in wbemtest utility in Windows to query via WMI.

The only other thing I can think of is that the device isn't configured to give enough information via SNMP due to a misconfiguration or that the SNMP service doesn't offer a piece of required information (AIX has issues not providing the HOST-RESOURCES MIB and needs net-snmp installed alongside on another port, for example).

If it's a Windows host, you'll also want to verify your credentials. You may want to try manually changing one of these nodes over to WMI to test the credentials on this particular host. Another option is to install the Agent on those servers.
