RPC server is too busy to complete this operation

I encountered an error today that I have not seen before on one of our servers. This was the RPC server is too busy to complete this operation when trying to log on to it remotely. I noticed I could not access any of the Computer Management tools or even pull up the server at the console. Does anyone know what I could check for to resolve this and if there are any recommended appliances that I could add from SAM to help catch this in the future?

A simple file monitor may be sufficient for catching and alerting you to this issue. Probably the simplest would be the file existence monitor pointed a common file such as c:\windows\win.ini

Hi Babreck,

Definitely go with the file monitor and watch the response timings you get over time.

The best answer to this error will of course come from Microsoft support but a few links you might find of help here would be Technet and Symantec. The Symantec one is interesting, even though it is old it provides counters to monitor. Between them both they would suggest that checking the SAM Windows 2003-2008 monitor will also give some good information, just to see the cpu and memory usage of the various services historically and try match up with Windows event logs matching the issue/error.

With all that said, I think Technet has the ultimate answer here. ./shrug
