Notify me when an IP address is reachable.

Question

I have a group of IP addresses in different subnets that I want to be notified if they become reachable. In other words, I want to be notified if someone or something is using these specific IP addresses.  Has anyone setup something like this in Solarwinds and how did you configure the alert separate from your basic "node down" alert? Also, is there a more efficient way of grouping them together for organizational purposes and alerting?

My only idea is to add them with a specific phrase in the node name that's the same for each node.  Then have the alert notify me if a node with that specific phrase in the node name becomes reachable.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Also this is not NPM specific, but IPAM/UDT (or both combined) might be good tools to consider as they can probably scan for this on a regular interval and provide you a history of IP assignment.

I'm not a Solarwinds guru, but if I understand what you're asking correctly, my approach would be add the node to SW and then create an alert where the trigger condition is when the node status is equal to up like below:

The downside for me would be that they would constantly be shown as nodes with problems.

But I would try and fix that by adding a custom property to the nodes and filter them out for the Nodes with Problems list. The custom property can then be used to assist with grouping of them together for organizational purposes and alerting.
