Problem with Citrix XenApp 5.0 ICA Session WMI counters

I now started using SAM and ran into a Problem regarding the "Citrix XenApp 5.0 ICA Session WMI counters" template. When I Test the template against a terminal server it tells me "Test failed with unknown status on <servername>: HResult: The specified object is not found on the system." We're using Citrix XenApp 5.5 and I added the Terminalservers via SNMPv2. The other Citrix Templates (e.g. Citrix XenApp 5.0 Core WMI counters) are running just fine. Any idea how I get the ICAsession template up and running?

A Windows Terminal Server does not have the same Performance Counter objects that a Citrix XenApp server would have. Please ensure you're applying this template to a XenApp server. There is also a known bug in Citrix's performance counter implementation that requires at least one user be connected via a Citrix ICA session before the Performance Counter Objects are created. With that said you'll want to make sure you're monitoring Citrix XenApp server that's in use, and not one that may be dormant running in a lab.

Thanks for your answer. The servers I want to monitor are our main Citrix farm. No test servers there. So again, any idea how I get the ICAsession template up and running?

Despite the name, the "Citrix XenApp 5.0 ICA Session WMI counters" template uses Windows Performance Counters via RPC to collect this information. You can verify that these counters are working remotely using the Perfmon.exe utility included with Windows on your Orion server. Using Perfmon.exe on the server where SAM is installed try connecting to the Citrix Server and look for the "ICA Session" category and "Input Audio Bandwidth" counter. If this doesn't work then there's likely a connectivity or permissions issue. Two other common issues that can cause this issue are the Remote Registry service on the Citrix Server is either stopped or hung. Try restarting the Remote Registry Service and see if this resoves the issue. If not, it could be that your Performance Counters on that host have become corrupted. To fix this run "lodctr.exe /r" from a command prompt of the Citrix server.

Thanks for your answer. I did some testing and it looks like perfmon on a Windows Server 2008 R2 has a problem connecting to a server running Windwos Server 2008 x86. My Solarwinds server is running aon Windows Server 2008 R2, my terminal Servers are running on Windows Server 2008 x86.

When I try connecting Perfmon between the terminalservers, everything works. When I try to do the same from my solarwinds server, I get an RPC error. The Servers are all on the same network segment with no routing or firewalls in between. The Windows Firewall is turned off.

Hmm. That's odd. It's unlikely to change the result, but it's worth trying. Assign Citrix XenApp 5.0 ICA Session WMI Counters template to the node, then edit the settings of that assigned application. Then try changing the "Platform to run polling job on" setting. Finally, test one of the component monitors to see if this helps. It's doubtful, but I'm running out of ideas.
