automating custom property and creating a group based on the assigned Application Template

Hi Community,

I have an application template assigned to about 400 servers and that template needs to be applied to 600 more servers. I am looking for somehow automate the process where when a server is added, it is assigned the template after the discovery.

So for the already applied ones I would like to create a group based on the assigned application template and add more text to the already created "Applications" Custom Property

and for the remaining ones creating a temporary group by creating an alert which filters out the servers based on the above property and then assigns the same template to them.

Rather than doing it manually node by node, I am looking to do it on the multiple nodes at a time.

I have tried to create an alert which filters out based on the assigned application template but failed to do so.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated

While this is not an answer to your questions, you did say suggestions are appreciated. This is just something to think about.

Would it be possible to:

1) create an dynamic group based on the custom property

2) Assign the application monitor to the group. (NOTE: I don't know if it will create duplicates for the ones that already have it assigned to the node)

3) Assign the custom property to the remaining nodes.

I do something similar, using a dynamic group populated (in our case) by a specific naming convention, and assigning specific templates to that group. I had some nodes that had the templates already manually assigned before I built this process and it didn't create duplicates. So now in cases where new servers are added that match our specific production naming convention, they automatically receive the required production monitoring templates without intervention.

So, you should be able to create a dynamic group populated by your custom property and apply your template to your group. Any new member of the group (by virtue of the property) gets the template.

The first part of your process, automatically populating the custom property, could be the tricky part and seems to be where you are getting stuck. If it were me, I'd initially go the brute force method of figuring out how to know if your node should have the template, then use the custom property editor to add the property en masse. That might give you an idea of the condition(s) that you need to look for in order to use an alert to maintain the custom property. In my case I bypassed the custom property altogether and just used the condition to populate the group, but I certainly can understand the need or desire to use a custom property instead.

The steps I followed are below.

- Removed the template from all the existing nodes as I didn't want to take a risk of having duplicates

- Created a dynamic group

- Applied the template to that group.
