SolarWinds Network Monitoring and Management System adding nodes

I am trying to "Add Node"

I enter the IP address of the Server that I am trying to add

Under Polling Method I choose the Radio Button Windows Server: WMI and ICMP

I have a Domain user with the correct creds ( I know they are correct as it works on other servers)

I click on "Test"

Get the message that "Test Failed"

I have ruled out ACL issues as there are two servers in the same subnet in the same VLAN, one will verify and the other will not.

The WMI service is running on the Target Sever, RPC is also running.

I have gone through all the Troubleshooting steps that I could find.

All still NO JOY

any help would be appreciated.

You will need to work on getting WMI operational. Until that's working correctly, Solarwinds will be unable to connect via WMI.

Hi,

Does ICMP (Status Only) work on the failed server? Also, is there a local firewall program running on the server itself that may be blocking access from the NPM server?

Along with John's suggestion above, you may want to try (temporarily) an AD account with elevated privileges to see if it's a permissions issue. Also, is the server you're attempting to add to SW on the domain that matches the credentials you're using?

All local Firewalls are disabled, Have disabled HIPS,

The user that I am using for the polling is part of a Domain group that is part of the Administrators Group. I know the credentials are valid as I can log into the failed server with the username and pwd.

I have not tried ICMP only. But I can use the ping feature in the CMD from the solar winds serve to the failed server with no issues.

Some of the servers that are failing are in the same Subnet and VLAN as some that are successful.

Made sure that the servers are in the correct OU, and even some successful servers are in the same OU.

Could this be an issue with the server itself and not SW?

I will try ICMP only on Monday and I will report back

I have taken a look at that PDF and all tested fine but still cannot Poll.

This is going to sound simple and silly, but are you using <domain>\username in the username field? Also, are you using a strong password with special characters? You might try a password that doesn't have special characters, sometimes they get misinterpreted as variables or OS special characters.

Yes, the username and password are cached and once I create the them I am unable to change. The username and password works for other servers, just a select few will not Poll, some of the ones that will not Poll are in the same subnet and VLAN as ones that will, and even in the same AD OU, which makes me believe that it might have something to do with a setting on the target server itself. I just cannot find it, as I have taken one server that does work and one that does not and compared every setting and permissions that I could think of, but they all match up.

To report in, I have tried ICMP only and I am able to Add Node while using ICMP only.

I have even tried using the FQDN as well as the IP address all with no luck.

Any joy going through the log files? BusinessLayerHost and CoreBusinessLayerHost (in ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Orion) might be of some use. You could try increasing the logging level of the business layer in Log Adjuster (debug perhaps), then try adding the node and checking the logs.

When testing the credentials, does say testing for a while and then time out or immediately fail?

Ok so the issue is with WMI. Have you tried logging onto the server in question with the credentials you are using in Solarwinds?

Yes, I can log into the target server with the credentials I am using to Poll, with no issues. Account is good in AD.

I did however, notice that the WMI service on the servers was getting a catastrophic error when trying to restart the service or view the properties.

I am trying how to figure out how to either rebuild the service or import a known working one from another server.

Yes, when testing the credentials it spins saying "Validating" for about 30 seconds and then will "Fail"

After all troubleshooting and reading found that the WMI service was corrupt on the Target servers.

After a repair / rebuild of the service I was able to Poll all the target servers with no issue.
