Question about a problem we had

Hi,

It's not a problem about Solarwinds but a problem we had on our network. I'm asking here because people here are network admins.

The problem last 5 minutes. First minute everything became extremely slow on the network then nothing was working.

Everything came back by it self 5 min later and I saw in NPM all ports of a specific vlan have between 1 to 3 millions Transmit discard (this happened in only 5 min !).

So it happen only to 1 vlan. It last 5 minutes. This vlan exist on all our switches but only "access" port have errors. No errors on links between switches or on the core switch.

I know it's probably impossible to find what caused this but, with your experience, do you know what can cause this ??

Are these cisco switches? is portfast on? (under each interface does "spanning-tree portfast" show up) If so, you could have had a cascade. The same packet(s) go back and forth between two switches due to a double uplink (think hall of mirrors).

Or, use command "show logging" or look on syslog to see if anything shows up.

yes cisco switches with portfast enable on desktops ports but I have BPDUGUARD enabled so if a loop would have been created, the port should have shutdown.

and I see nothing of interest in the logs....
