How do I get Hyper V status / stats to display correctly for Server 2012 R2 nodes?

Hello there, we have been successfully using Orion NPM 10.4.1 to monitor our Hyper V estate for a while but now we have added a few new Hyper V servers running Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 the statuses are not being displayed and we get a "Host Status: Could not poll" message. The servers respond correctly to remote WMI queries so we can see volume information and CPU load etc it just seems to be the Hyper V aspects that won't return values.

Has the WMI namespace for Hyper V data change in Server 2012 R2, if so is there anyway I can tweak my Orion NPM 10.4.1 to poll these new values?

Any help and advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

experiencing same issue.

multiple Hyper V hosts not poling using WMI.

host status message:- Cannot get Hyper-V virtualization service instance. Check whether "Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management" service is running.

but confirm the service is running OK

Have you opened a support ticket? Also, I'm curious what drives you to remain on NPM 10.4.1?

Are you seeing this on the latest versions of NPM? e.g. 12.4?

Hi Serena, we are unsupported so unable to log a ticket plus it is an issue that has almost certainly been resolved in future updates. I wasn't able to justify the yearly maintenance charge of over £10k which is why we remain on NPM 10.4.1.

Had more people within our ICT department bought in to all the great features of NPM, SAM, NTA etc then we would have almost certainly carried on paying for support and upgrades. I felt that unless people were prepared to use what we had properly that there was no point wasting money upgrading to new features that would not be used as they should. I work for a local authority where money is very tight. We are also still finding ways to get more out of NPM 10.4.1. Monitoring of our server estate is now done by Microsoft SCCM which is a beast and in my view not as straight forward to use as Solarwinds products. We have had to purchased an overlay from Squared Up to produce dashboards which I am not sure is worth the cost.

Ah I see, that's a perfect explanation and maybe if we talk through your scenario a bit I can confirm at which version the issue is resolved. For clarity, is this still the situation that 2012 R2 servers are showing as unknown and you're therefore using SCCM instead for Hyper-V visibility? Is it only occurring for 2012 R2 servers or for all Hyper-V servers? What's your current workaround to get visibility?

We have not checked recently (but seeing as how our Solarwinds software has not been updated at all) but the scenario was that in Solarwinds | Virtualization | Hyper-V we could only see Server 2012 Host information and all our Server 2012 R2 hosts showed as could not poll. We have used a bit of Powershell in SAM to get some information off of the hosts and in to NPM and we also use a SQL SSIS package to transfer some data out of Virtual Machine Manager allowing us to create reports in NPM that show which Hyper-V virtual servers are on which Host. I would be pretty confident that Solarwinds updated their Hyper-V Virtualization connectors to be able to interrogate Server 2012 R2 in their next major release i.e. NPM 11.x.x
