Monitoring a windows service for a desired state of down

I am wondering if it possible to use APM to monitor a windows service that the normal state is not running and abnormal state is running. For example the MSSQLSERVER service on the fail over node of a cluster, which would be stopped unless the cluster failed over.

Hello Stephanie,

You might want to take a look at the Windows Service Monitor. It will report physical and virtual memory used. Hopefully, if the service is not running, these will be 0. If so you can set a warning or critical threshold to alert you if this value is greater than 0, in which case the service is presumably running.

This task should be simplified with a new feature planned for the upcoming release.

Hello Stephanie,
APM service monitor will be "Down" (red) if service is not running and this can't be customized right now. If you want to have it "green" if service is not running, you can use Windows Script Monitor and customize it's result for your needs. Your script can check for service status and if it's not running, return "Up", if it is running return "Down".

This is the vbscript, which uses WMI to connect to remote computer to monitor service state. You can easily modify the end of the script so it returns 'Up' when service is down. Then you can use this vbscript in Windows Script Monitor component.
