NCM with NPM - Syslog and Trap Service Install question

Background:

We have NPM 10 and just bought NCM 5.5. We want to install NCM on the same server as NPM. The NPM server has the Solarwinds Syslog Service and Solarwinds Trap Service already installed and running.

Question:

When installing NCM, it wants to install what appear to be it's own version of the Syslog and Trap service. Should we have gone ahead and installed those services or not? We did not. I do believe that when we initially selected them to install we got a warning that they were already installed.

Is this setup and how to perform a NCM install when using this setup documented somewhere? I did read through both manuals (quickstart and admin) but I don't see a mention of it.

I checked that with SW support and was told to use the NPM syslog and trap and to disable NCM as we were a) integrated b) using NPM alerts to send alert messages

Curiously, I've always wondered this myself. We don't use any of the syslog or SNMP features available in NCM, but if we ever decided to, this would be good to know. :-)

Not sure if I fully understand what you are asking. We installed NCM itself on the same server as NPM. That is where the SYSLOG and TRAP question comes up. We answered no and then ran the NCM Integration Module.

As a test, we went back, ran a repair of NCM which triggered NCM to ask if we wanted to install the services again. When we selected SYSLOG and TRAP services, NCM stated we had to stop the existing servives (The ones NPM installed). We stopped them and proceded with the NCM repair. At the end of the repair, we had an NCM SYSLOG and NCM TRAP along with the old SYSLOG and TRAP services. The NCM versions were started. When we tried to start the older version, the SYSLOG failed and the TRAP started. Which surprised us that TRAP started - since the newer NCM TRAP service is using the same port.

So we know this is not set up right, but the question is, which way is correct? THE NPM SYSLOG and TRAP or the NCM SYSLOG and TRAP replacing them? And is this in the doc and we just missed it?
