need a succinct definition of monitor, application and template please

I am struggling a little with wording to describe the difference between a monitor, application and a template. I think that a template is just a collection of one or more monitors, but how can I define these terms and how they relate to each other?

APM has two types of monitors:

Component Monitor - this is a single monitor that collects data from a single component (e.g., a process, a port, a permon counter)

Application Monitor - this is a collection of component monitors that are treated as a monitoring group that has a group status. An Application Monitors is actively monitor a server. Think of it as "live".

Application Monitor Template - this is a template for the creation of an Application Monitor. It refers to a group of component monitors, but the template isn't monitoring anything. You apply the template to the server to create one or more Application Monitors. The value of the template is that you can change the template once and all of the Application Monitors based on that template will inherit the change.

Component monitors are the fundamental entity that is used to collect data on a process, service, port or user experience.

One or more component monitors are assembled into an application monitor (using the application monitor template) which is applied to one or more target nodes on the Orion network.

Right?

Couple more questions: What is the difference between a user experience monitor for HTTP and a port monitor for port 80?

On a trivial note, why not call Application monitors groups instead to avoid confusion?

Cana component monitor be assigned directly to a node for monitoring, or must it be assigned to an application monitor (even if it is the only one assigned)? The reason I ask is that I noticed that the Component Monitor Library shows only Application Monitors and Application Monitor Templates under each category of monitor type.

Where are the individual component monitors listed, or do I have to configure them with the AppBuilder?

The AppBuilder is used to query devices for unique services or apps that can then be configured as a new monitor----right?

No, a component monitor cannot be assigned directly to a node; at least, I haven't found a method to do so.

You can also create a new component monitor when you create a new application monitor template.

Yes, the AppBuilder is the only option if you want to be presented with a list of running processes to monitor on the server.

yes, via the AppBuilder. Pick a component monitor and then at the end, you can assign it directly to a server

The component library is showing you types of components. E.g., a Windows Service monitor. To assign it to server, you have to specify a specific instance (e.g., notepad.exe).

Whereas a port monitor simply checks that a node is listening on the specified port, a User Experience Monitor takes it one step further and makes use of the service on this port as a user would. For example, the DNS TCP monitor would simply attempt to make a connection on port 53. The DNS UE Monitor would follow the whole process through of resolving a hostname allowing you to create an alert that would trigger if an unexpected result (IP address) was returned.
