How to trim down the ConfigMgmt database size?

My Database team is complaining of the size of the ConfigMgmt database on our SQL server.

We are running NCM 5.5.2 on an enterprise SQL server with 203 devices in the database. We purge configs older than 6 revisions back.

The current datbase size is over 77Gb in size. How can we clear up space in the database?

I dont know the answer to your question, but I can say that our configMgmt is no where near that large. I have about 600 devices, mostly cisco routers and switches. My DB size is is only about 15 gigs. I'm wondering if something is not getting purged properly in the DB. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the subject will chime in.

Hi Jon--

Yes, it sounds like you need to purge A couple of things to try. It sounds like you need to purge your configuration file. Check out page 68 of the Orion NCM Administrator Guide. The section is called Automating Configuration File Purges. I've attached the text file of it to this post.

Also, a new version of NCM is available. If you are on active maintenance, you can download NCM 6.0 for free.

I don't think it will be the configuration files making the database so large - with only 200 odd devices and 6 versions it should be a very small database.

Our database with 4500 devices and 10 versions is <15Gig in size.

I would be looking at known problem areas - for example the policycache or audit tables. Use SQL server manager and look at the row count for each table - this should help identify tables (or maybe just a single table) that have a huge number of rows.

At least this will narrow down the problem area.
