AppInsight for IIS - Unable to start polling

Hey All,

We've got the AppInsight for IIS template applied to a handful of servers, and it generally works fine.

Today I discovered that this monitor for just one particular server has been in an Unknown state since late last week. The monitor simply says "Unable to start polling."

I've checked the monitor config and tested the creds, and it indicates it's all good ("Credentials, PowerShell URL and PowerShell WebAdministration module tested successfully."). Thinking it might just need a slap, I removed the application monitor from the node and reapplied it. Same result.

I also checked the config of the server against the manual configuration steps indicated in the monitor. Lastly, I've looked for any events in the MS event viewer that might hint toward a solution, but that got me nowhere. (Events confirm the successful logon of the service account that the monitor uses to the remote system.)

What am I missing here?

UPDATE: FIXED!

Just got off the phone with support. The immediate issue was that the node was configured for SNMP polling. We switched that to WMI polling and we were immediately able to add the AppInsight monitor. Not sure if I missed that somewhere in the documentation.

We actually ran into a secondary issue though, where the monitor still wasn't successfully polling. We turned on debug logging and determined the website was returning a non-standard HTTP code. Further research determined that the designers of this site created a custom HTTP response if that account accessing the site was not configured as an employee (the site in question was a company performance appraisals site).

We initially changed the monitor's creds to my personal creds for testing, however the monitor continued to hit the site as the service account that was configured on the node for WMI polling. Changed the node's polling creds and the issue cleared up. Now I just have to get the service account configured as an employee and we'll be set.

System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationException: Enum value '###' is invalid for type 'System.Net.HttpStatusCode' and cannot be serialized. Ensure that the necessary enum values are present and are marked with EnumMemberAttribute attribute if the type has DataContractAttribute attribute.

I opened a support case for this. One of the interesting things that came up is that AppInsight for IIS doesn't even appear as an option when listing the resources for the affected node. The support rep couldn't tell me what Solarwinds looks for when populating that option, but you'd think it would just be the IIS server role or something.

I'll update the thread as I learn more.

AppInsight for IIS supports IIS 7.0 (Windows 2008), IIS 7.5 (Windows 2008 R2), IIS 8.0 (Windows 2012), and IIS 8.5 (Windows 2012 R2). Is it possible you are trying to monitor IIS 6.0 (Windows 2003) or IIS 6.5 (Windows 2003 R2)?

Good to know, but unfortunately not applicable to this one.

To clarify, the AppInsight for IIS monitor was successfully applied to this server before, and worked for a while before suddenly stopping.
