Initial Orion API call is always slow

I did originally ask this question in the NPM section as I didn't know about this section.

We are doing some development to create and update nodes in Orion using the API however we have run into a problem where each time the code/application executes, the initial call always takes around 15 seconds to return. Subsequent calls in the same execution then respond quickly but when the code executes again, the initial call is back to 15 seconds.

The issue has been noticed across three different installs of Orion and in different environments so its not believed to be a server or environment issue. During our testing we have also noted that even if there is just a few seconds between each execution of the code/application the first call is always 15 seconds.

We have been using the OrionSDK on GitHub but if it makes any difference, the first call is always a query request. The application is also being executed on the same server as where we have Orion NPM installed.

It would be good if the first call didn't always take around 15 seconds so are there any thoughts on what may be causing it?

A few questions:

1. Are these systems connected to the internet? I have seen behavior like this from certain clients when trying to check certificate revocation lists - if you are not connected to the internet, some clients will wait for the CRL check to timeout before moving on.

2. What client/language are you using?

3. Do you see these delays when querying using SWQL Studio or SwisPowerShell?

4. What kind of account are you using for authentication? An Orion account or an AD account?

1. I will need to double check. It will obviously be able to poll other devices but our servers don't usually have access to the internet (port 80) unless needed.

2. We are using C# and it happens through both a custom Integration Pack in a System Centre Orchestrator Runbook and most recently a Windows Console Application. However, we have also seen it while composing queries in Fiddler.

3. SWQL Studio is mostly fast with no delay but there are occasions where a query has taken a bit over 15 seconds. We haven't tried SwisPowerShell.

4. It is an Orion account.

Just to add that while testing today, the first query was taking the usual 15 seconds but then all of a sudden the first query would start to return quickly. However the first query would then revert back to being slow. Today, from a certain point in time, is the first day in about two week where the first query hasn't been slow but it did revert again.

So we have seen it slow in our custom code, SWQL Studio and Fiddler. However it seems to be slow more often than not in our custom code and Fiddle but that could be as we are using those more.

Is your system heavily loaded? Is the web console slow in general?

It might be helpful to look at when in the request/response sequence the delay is occurring. curl with verbose output could help. Like this:

curl -k -v -u "myusername:mypassword" "https://myserver:17778/SolarWinds/InformationService/v3/Json/Query?query=SELECT+TOP+10+Caption+FROM+Orion.Nodes"

With "-v" curl will print lots of details about opening the connection, the TLS handshake, sending the request, and receiving the response. Watch for the long delay and see what stage it occurs at.
