Hello. We run a regular Inventory job that runs every two days in our Orion NCM 6.1 DLX installation. I have a query about how the IP Address component of this operates and reports any issues that it may have encountered.
It appears our regular inventory job is not picking up all of the IP address for all devices. If you view the list of IP addresses for a device that have been in the list of nodes for months, if not years, NCM does not appear have a full list of the IP addresses on the device. It may be that it discovered all of the IP addresses on the devices when it was first added, but as the device configuration has been changed the list of IP addresses in NCM is not being updated with the change in the configuration of the device.
We viewed the list of IP addresses for a device using these steps: Open device in NCM, select 'Inventory' tab > select 'IP Addresses' item. It did not list all of the IP addresses that are defined on the device. We did a manual update of the device's inventory: Actions > Update Inventory.... This took a few minutes but when done it correctly listed all of the IP addresses on the device. This is quite a concern. I was expecting that our regular Inventory job should have been doing this work for us. Our regular Inventory job has 'IP Addresses' has one of the items that is included as part of the job. We looked at the log for our regular inventory job and it does not indicate there were issues in getting IP Address or any other details for devices that did not have all of the IP address information.
We do not want to have to manually initiate an 'update inventory' for devices where the IP addresses may have changed. Has anyone else seen this sort of issue with the regular inventory job? Is there something that we may have missed from our Inventory job that may be stopping the inventory job doing all the tasks that we expect it to be doing?
On a related matter, we see that Orion NCM tries to test ICMP and SNMP reachability for all the IP addresses that it has found on all of the devices that are defined to it. Is there a way for this feature to be turned off?
Any help gratefully accepted.
Regards,
... Simon
