Google Maps in Orion 10.x

There are too many articles on Google Maps or Earth to be used in Orion.

Does anyone know which one can actually be used or should be used?

I like the linked maps capabilities but there are too many current Solarwinds competidors that have this functionality on the fly. From an older (2008) article, it seems that Solarwinds were developing it (Google Maps Beta).

Is Orion capable to use it?

Is there a recommended procedure on how to?

This topic is very interesting. It seems this pops up from the community about every 9-12 months, gets hased out and always ends with the same answer.

Solarwinds stance is from a legal point in that they can not use the API without paying for it since it is not open to the public, but rather a paid product.

The end user is free to choose one of the following: purchase the API and develope it for use for themselves, use the free API and risk legal issues, figure out another map plan.

We have since abandoned the idea due to the cost and limitations of the API agreement based on the free API.

Many ways have been posted by the community and all of them good in their own right. Depends a lot on what you are looking for. You are right on Google Maps, their cost structure is prohibitive to us adopting it without charging for it, which we do not want to do. Many of the vendors you are referencing that have it are either using it illegally or have severe restrictions on it. We continue to evaluate other mapping vendor options that would allow us to give you similar functionality in a method that does not have these strict restrictions.

SolarWinds can't add it to their product line without charging us heavilly for it, but you can add it yourself. Here's a sample showing how you can populate a map with your data and custom fields.

Google terms and conditions require free public access to the maps. Don't charge people to use it. Don't place it behind a firewall. Nothing is mentioned about burying the url where nobody will stumble across it, but do so at your own discretion. Google also has a paid-for service if you want to keep your data private.

Google has lowered their pricing. If you're interested in keeping your personal maps personal, then this is the way to go. The price has been dropped from $4 per 1,000 map loads to $0.50 per 1000 map loads (1/8th the original price). You can view the Google Geo Developers Blog for more details.
