Disappearing perfmon counters

Hello,

I have recently run into a problem and am checking all posible resources for a solution. Has anyone else expewrienced perfmon counters disappearing from APM or remote perfmon.mmc? I recently added the Windows print service template to our print servers and everything was working fine up to a point. All of a sudden they disappear and i get an error "Catagory not found". When I then go to use perfmon.exe and remotely connect to that server, only 1/2 of the counters show up.

One would think something recently happened in our network, but this has happened before with our SQL perfmon counters. With that, I opened up a SW support ticket which came down to getting microsoft involved. (They are still digesting all the logs i sent). I will continue to Google the problem, wait for MS and hope someone out here has a fix.

Sorry, should have mentioned, this only happens on Windows Server 2008 servers.

Our orion box is on Server 2008. When I try to run perfmon for a remote box, I have to type in \\computer and hit enter twice. I will then get the full list of perfmon counters for that box.

Hello Mike,

Do you see all counters when using local perfmon console? You may also try to restore you counters as described in this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;300956

Rebuilding the counters did not resolve the issue and as we migrate our environment to Server 2008, this is becoming a real pain. The problem is intermittent with no clues in event logs as to why only certain specific counters dissapear or any malfunction. So in short any other help would be great! I am also predicting this will slowly become an issue with more customers as they go to server 2008. In my expert opinion though, this issue is NOT a flaw in the APM, as using MS perfmon to view a remote server revelas the same issue.

Hello Mike,

another issue can be with 64bit vs. 32bit versions. I assume that your Windows 2003 was 32bit while Windows 2008 is 64bit. On 64bit system you don't see 32bit counters by default. See this article for more information.

Please, try to use verification mentioned in the article to see if missing counters will appear and report here if you are able to see them using 32bit version of mmc.
