Average CPU Utilisation for Certain Types of Servers

Hi there,

First post, so please be gentle.

I'm a SQL Server DBA who looks after the database that our Solarwinds installation sits on. I've been asked to produce some reports that tell us what the average CPU utilisation is for certain types of servers.

Any ideas how I can put this together, either via the front end or by querying the database directly?

All help greatly appreciated.

Go to your Orion console and you can use the Report Writer application to write a report to give you the details that you want. Once you have a report created in the Report Writer you can make it available on the website if you wish. You will also have the ability to see the SQL Query that it is using which should help you understand where the data is being gathered from.

Hello Andy,
what exactly do you mean by "server" here?

You can monitor specific database process (sqlserv.exe, etc.) by "Process monitor - SNMP" or "Process monitor - WMI". These will give you information about process CPU and memory consumption and you can generate reports from these data.

If you need to monitor different aspects of database and those data are available through performance counters, you can use "Performance counter monitor".

If required data are available in database itself using some SQL query, you can use "SQL Server User Experience Monitor" to execute query and get result data as statistic.

If you explain your use case in more detail, we can find more detailed way how to achieve what you need.

Hi Jiri,

Thank you for your response. By 'server' I'm referring to the physical hardware.

I'm looking for a report that will give us the average CPU utilisation (over say, the last couple of weeks) of a number of servers (about 400 or so).

I know that the Solarwinds administrators are already retrieving this information, so it should be available from the database somewhere, I just don't know how to access it.

Hello Andy,
CPU and memory utilization or physical server can be monitored by SNMP. If you add server as SNMP node to Orion, these data are collected automatically and you don't need to set anything extra in APM.

Then you can create custom reports on nodes as Byron suggested above using Report writer.

There is already default report - Historical CPU and Memory Reports -> CPU Load - Last Month. Look at this report to see what data and how are processed so you can create your own report that fits your needs.
