Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
NNM vs. Orion v7
jneiberger
We currently use NNM for fault management and I'm evaluating other options. We've had NNM for many years but we're not making full use of it and Orion NPM has a lot of features that I think would be beneficial. However, it also appears to have some limitations, even in the latest release.
I'm curious if any of you were in similar situations and migrated away from NNM to Orion. How did the installation and transition go for you? Are you happy with your decision? Is there anything in NNM that you *really* wish were in NPM?
Overall, if you really just need fault management and notification, how would you compare NNM and NPM? From an operational standpoint (like if you worked in a NOC), which would you prefer?
Many thanks!
John

We have both. We are monitoring about 300 devices, 2000+ interfaces, and I can truely say that NNM is a much more powerful product for UP/Down Monitoring. We use Orion exclusively for monitoring performance issues, but the limited MIB support in Orion is a major issue. NNM is extremely scalable, very complicated to setup if you want to do anything advanced, but at the same time it is rock solid. I would suggest that everyone who really wants to monitor a WAN buy Orion for general statistical collection, NNM with Vytek TelAlert for UP/DOWN monitoring, and a decent quality NetFlow Analysis engine for detailed network traffic information. Just my two cents.

John,
I'm in the same boat, We use a combination of NNM and MRTG and big brother to keep an eye on stuff...Currently NNM is used for Up/down status only. I looked at netvigil's helix and orion. What we hope to do is go with Orion for the basic network overview info and also purchase the engineers toolset for use in creating graphs and tools to monitor the other mibs and info that orion does not collect stats on. This should at least eliminate our need for NNM and MRTG. We'll see I'm still evaluating and there are some limitations to the views that are a bit of a pain but its been so easy to use and set up that I'm pretty sure this is the product we're looking for. We'll see...

I've got both but we found NNM to time consuming and comlicated to use compared to what Orion gives us out of the box. NNM is pretty expensive for Up/Down status isn't it?
We decided to move away from NNM primarily because of the cost to keep maintenance on it.

I'm not familiar w/ the SolarWinds Toolset.. does it let you query additional SNMP MIB stats? Can it integrate w/ Orion?
cheers,
