Interface Name Character Limitation?

It looks like there is an interface name character limitation for Orion, is this the case? If so what is the limitation and is there any way to change it?

On many of our network devices we have long interface names that tell us a bunch of information about that interface, in the Orion web interface it looks to be cutting off those names.

I too would be interested in finding out an answer to this question as I have the same thing. Often we label the interface with Circuit numbers and a brief description to help with troubleshooting for the engineers, but the Solarwinds cuts off half the info, also I have noticed there seems to be a restriction on the Node Caption ID ?

is that a cisco device?have you tried this?

a mib walk would also show what it is displayed via snmp.

Also noticed when you "list Resources" of a node in System Manager , the full interface name is there , but in the web view it isn't . Found that if there is a space in the description the web name stops there ......... I put an underscore or dash in it and the web now gives the full name.

Also noticed that if an interface name is changed on the device it again is updated in "list Resources" of a node in System Manager but not in the web view :-(

The general length limit for interface name / caption / alias is 255 characters. We are going to increase this in the next major release.

Caption is composed as "ifDescr - ifAlias". We are already aware of some issues with this. I will create an internal tracking ticket for the space vs. dash behavior.

"List resources" is not done by polling engine, so the description can be different.

The caption is only calculated when the interface is polled for the first time, and never changes afterwards. This is by design, so user can edit the caption and it's not overwritten by following polls.

This is not strictly true - if you clear the interface caption it will be overwritten with the current caption. Just did this as part of a support query

Is it not possible to Tuncate interface types, as it helps with the views , so that if you have long interface alias configured they do not spread over 2 lines.

Example

GigabitEthernet4/9 = Gi4/9

FastEthernet1/1 = Fe1/1

Port-channel10 = Pc10

Serial2/1 = Se2/1
