Use a SWQL 'Custom Query' widget to query a SQL Database Table

Hi,

Firstly apologies if this has been asked a million times before. I've spent some time searching for examples of what I'd like to do but I can't find anything which quite matches.

I have a custom table in my Orion database which I'd like to be searchable from the Orion website. I basically want to achieve the exact functionality of the 'Custom Query' widget but I'd like to search a database table, not a SWQL one.

Is this possible?

Edit: Sorry, I failed to mention the main reason for doing this: I'd like the output to be searchable, just like in the 'Custom Query' widget. That is the reason I'm not using a 'Custom Table' instead.

Don't believe that is quite possible... Are you interested in displaying something outside the Orion DB? I'm trying to understand your use-case to see why an equivalent SWQL query would not be suitable.

You can use a Custom Table resource instead of a Custom Query resource. Add a Custom Table widget to the page where you want to display the query output. Edit the new Custom Table resource and click "Select Resource." In the Data Source Picker, choose "Advanced Data Source Query (SQL, SWQL). Under Query Type, click the SQL radio button. Paste your SQL query into the text field and save.

Hi @m-milligan, apologies, I failed to mention that I'd like the output to be searchable (like in the custom query widget) and not just output the entire table. That's why the custom table widget won't work for me.

Hi @ioan_bucsa, the data I want to display is indeed in the Orion database, but it not in a standard Orion table, it is one I have created myself.

My created table contains a custom dataset which actually originated through syslog messages. Certain syslog messages have been parsed and normalised and inserted into my table. This data is then stored permanently.

I would then like a widget on the Orion website which can quickly search through this data and pull back a result.

Aha, that does rule out a custom table. You could create a custom HTML page with the query and a search function, but then you run into challenges with security. I'll poke around my installation and see if I've done anything similar. If I find it, I'll post an update here.

I see... I don't know of any method that you could use in order make use of the 'Custom Query' widget. Maybe someone else could weigh in on this..

I have something similar (a separate DB residing on the same server containing my custom tables) and have used some HTML+JS, ASPX or embedded external sources (Grafana) to display the data while still making use of advanced functionalities (like search).
