NetFlow Server Tuning
FormerMember
I am in the process of installing Orion with NetFlow. I have about 500 devices in Orion and about 30 interfaces in Netflow, with the plan to grow to 100 total. The applications are on the same server and a separate server is running SQL 2005. My SQL DB has grown to about 20G in a week. If I try to run a search for a NetFlow App the web pages time out. I wanted to get some recommendations on server tuning in relation to NetFlow. Both servers have multiple Zeon processors and 4G or Memory and run W2K3. I'm afraid adding the additional 70 interface will make the system unusable. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My recent post might help you.
If you don't have a separate SQL server, you'll need one. It will need more than 4GB RAM... like 8-16GB.
What kind of disks are you using? You will need to stripe multiple high-speed disks, preferably 6+. IDE/SATA is not acceptable. You will need 15K SAS/SCSI or FC drives.
As a temporary workaround to the ASP timeout problem, there is a parameter somewhere in the IIS Management Console that let's you increase the timeout threshold. It's probably documented elsewhere in this forum.

We do have a separate SQL box with SCSI drives and 4G of Memory. After reviewing some of the forums I've noticed several others are having similar issues. I have temporarily stopped Netflow, to keep Orion from slowing down. Our SQL server became unresponsive while Netflow was running. I spoke with Solarwinds support yesterday and was told a new version of Netflow will be available sometime in May 07 which should fix some of these problems. I think I am going to shelf Netflow until the new version comes out. Thanks for the tips.
