sizing question

I recently mail support for this request but they never answer me ... I want to monitor 3500 Routers and 3500 Windows 2003 Server with 1 volume, and I have an Intel QuadCore 2.0 GHz with 8GB RAM DDR2, with SQL Server 2003 Standard. That machine could be enought for that amount of devices???

How many elements total do you have? The recommendation is 8000 to 10000 elements per polling engine.

Just to be clear. An element is a Node, Interface, or Volume. Your 3500 routers are going to really give you the relevant interface count. It's unlikely you can monitor all of this with one box. You'll probably want one box for the Orion database, a separate box for the Orion server, and then one box for each of the extra pollers you'll need. Like Mark says above, you'll get about 8000 or so elements off the first box, and then you scale up by adding more pollers.

Note: If you poll more frequently than the defaults, you'll get fewer elements per poller. The limiting factor is how much data per unit of time you're driving with a single poller.

I am currently supporting an installation with 6 polling engines 1 app server with a single SQL DB server. The polling Engines average 6000 to 7000 interfaces each with statistical polling scheduled to run every 15 minutes. The caveat to sizing is that the numbers need to be scrutinized due to an interface consists of an additional count considering status, bandwidth utilization inbound and outbound just to mention a few. For instance one of the polling engines has 157 nodes with 7383 interfaces but the ICMP & SNMP polling index is 14,874 that polling every 15 minutes. This queue is what concerns me and needed to be reviewed when sizing an Orion environment.
