Orion Newbie (Help Configuring Orion and SQL Server VM's in VMware)

Just purchased Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor SL250, Server & Application Monitor AL700, Storage Resource Monitor SRM150, and Virtualization Manager VM32.

My question is we are in a virtual environment using VMware.

Can i install the Orion SQL database on a VM and if so what are the requirements for best case scenario for setting that vm up it will be running SQL 16.

As for the Orion Server itself, same question as far as configuring the vm itself. The install guide gives basic hardware settings/reccomendations. But doesn't list specifics like how many hard drives i need, how big they should be etc...

any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Received a couple replies with great information to get me up and running. KM Sigma's Blog was exactly what i was looking for. Have both my servers built and will be getting ready to install the Orion software next week. Again, thanks to all for the help.

A good place to start to understand the nuts and bolts of setting up a nice Orion environment is to check KMSigma's blog posts about how he builds his. You can really slap any old vm together in many cases for an environment of that size, but Kevin has spent probably way too much time thinking about what could be considered "best practices"

Quick answer to this is yes. It just needs a dedicated NIC as stated on the link below.

As for How big your Hard drive should be, based on your description, just take the SAM Requirements as baseline and the more important thing there is the database as it will store all your data. The Application doesn't really need to be that big of a storage. It just needs to be powerful enough to Poll from Devices/Server store it on the database.

Also, it seems they do include Hard drive recommendations.
