Backing up Orion Server via Veritas
Mithrilhall
Does anyone here use Veritas Backup Exec to backup their Orion server?
I'm using Veritas Backup Exec v9.1 with Open File Option to backup my Orion server and I think Veritas is killing the database connection from Orion to MS SQL server.
Every morning that I come in my Orion page lists the last time the database updated was over 2 hours ago and in order for it to start working correctly I have to reboot the whole server.(This just started happening when I upgraded to Orion v7.8)
We're not backing up the SQL server with Veritas and we're not even backing up the directories that the SQL database resides in.
I'm going to try a few more things in Veritas to determine what directories/files it's choking on but I was just curious to see if we were the only ones with this problem.

when you say open file option do you mean SQL agent??.. this is really required when backing up and SQL server... however it is useless with the MDSE version of SQL...
I would suggest you do the following to be safe
1 - exclude the location of the live db from you backup
2 - use the tools built into Orion to run daily and create a database backup outside of the location of the live database
3 - schedule your veritas backup to include this separate location in its scope et voila a very safe and sure way to back up your DB....
Hope this is some help.. I have done this for a year or so with no problems......

I don't back up my SQL Database (non-MSDE) via Veritas. Our DBA backs it up via SQL and dumps it to a different server that is backedup regularly.
What database tools should I be running against the database on a nightly basis?
