Custom Severity Alerts

To all -

I am aware that an admin can add alert custom properties to the severity section on the alert properties page but is there a way to customize the categories for the Severity of Alert pull down options? I've seen a couple of posts on Thwack but i have yet to find a definitive answer as to if it's possible without seriously modifying SW.
