Real time change detection in NCM 7.0 + Windows 2008 R2

I am getting nuts configuring Configuration Change Real-Time Detection. I am running NPM 10.2.1 + NCM 7.0 on Windows Server 2008 R2

Facts:

- SolarWinds NPM Tab correctly shows all received traps.

- When I start NCM Trap Viewer, i receive message "SolarWinds NCM Trap Viewer is no longer active". However, you use it to view the previous message history and related configs, which can server as a guide for recreating relevant events"

- When I enter NCM Trap Viewer, there are no traps shown

- Traps table in NCM database doesn't contain any traps

- Traps table in NPM database contains all traps

- I've tried playing with Microsoft SNMP Trap service and SolarWinds Trap Service in all possible combinations, but still nothing.

Program documentation is very confusing:

- Help file that comes with NCM and that is accessed through application itself states:

1. that Alert Action should use "Path\Configuration Management\ConfigAutoDownload.exe" $IP

2. that Syslog Server and Trap Server services are installed and launched with Administrator access and that access must be granted manually using "Compatibility tab" - "Run this program as an administrator"

- SolarWinds Orion NCM Administrator Guide PDF that came with application states the following:

1. that Alert Action should use "Path\Orion\SolarWinds.NRMRTNforwrder.exe" $IP (page 102)

2. that Syslog Server and Trap Server services are installed and launched with Administrator access and that access must be granted manually using right click on file and "Run as ..."

In the end, I did what is written in Administrator Guide in PDF that comes with NCM, but I still can't get RTCD to work.

Can anyone help?

Unfortunately, resources sent to me by Francois didn't help (thanks anyway). If anyone has SolarWinds NPM+NCM 7.0 deployed on Windows 2008 R2 and running RTCD with SNMP traps, can he please answer me the following questions:

1. What is startup type and running status of "SNMP Trap" and "SolarWinds Trap Service" on your server? What account are they running under?

2. Did you do anything special regarding account those services are running under and permissions for SolarWinds databases? If yes, what?

3. What was your solution for running those services "as Administrator". Procedure mentioned in PDF od Administrator Guide that comes with NCM 7.0 doesn't work for me. I've settled on instructions found in some older documentation that uses "run as administrator" on compatibility tab.

4. Does Traps table in ConfigMgmt database (or whatever you called it during installation) contains any SNMP Traps? This one can be checked from either SQL Server Management Studio or from SolarWinds Database Manager.

5. Do you see your SNMP Traps when you run "SolarWinds NCM Trap Viewer" (not Trap Viewer)?

Of course, if anyone from SolarWinds is reading this, any assistance would be appreciated.

make sure that the devcie is sending the syslog/snmp traps to the NCM server. Do you have any other syslog server where you can test if the device sends these logs out.

I am having the exact same problem with NCM v7 running on Win2008 R2. I am not running NPM. The devices are sending the traps.

There are permissions issues on the filesystem that seem to cause this error. A Solarwinds tech fixed it for me today while working on a trouble ticket. The permissions issues also happened to fix the problem noted in this thread.

Things to check for:

NCM syslog/traps viewers are no longer active.

You must use the NPM syslog/traps viewer.

Copy the syslog/trap rule over to the NPM syslog/trap (true for all architectures, even standalone).

In NCM 6.1 and before the setup was to create a rule in your syslog/trap view that ran this executable:

"c:\program files\solarwinds\configuration management\configautodownload.exe"

The issue is that in NCM 7.0 some things have changed.

The path to your install may or may not be in the previous path.

Check to see if .exe exist, and if it exist in the old path. It may have moved to c:\program files\solarwinds\orion\NCM

If the path has change, adjust the rule.

Also, new file solarwinds.NCM.RTNforwarder.exe should be used now per the admin guide. While configautodownload.exe should still work, one should adjust to the new rtnforwarder file.

Finally, based on the new paths, check the NCM file/Settings for your RTCD setup and make sure your RTN.log path is pointed to the new path as well, if necessary.
