Migrate from Orion 6.5 to 8.1 leaving untouched original server

Question

Following to my previous post (moving maps between two orion servers), I've a new problem: I would like to upgrade from Orion 6.5 to 8.1 but I need to keep the original server running. So it's a sort of upgrade/migration

It could be a way to backup the old database, restore it in a new sql server, install a new Orion 8 and tell him to use the restored db?

This is merely a suggestion and may not work due to the older version you have but you need to-

Install 8.1 on the new server-

Make a copy of the Maps/Reports folder from 6.5 and backup and restore the DB on the new server.

Run the config. wizard and point Orion to that 6.5 DB

Again this may not work- so the other suggestion:

On the old server you have to upgrade the 6.5 version up to Orion 7.8.5- then to 8.1 and then (migrate) backup the DB and restore the DB on the 8.1 server-

Again you would need to follow the steps in the migration guide - and before you attempt anything Make a copy of the map/reports folders from the Old server - and backup the DB-

Hi,

The old Orion server can't be stopped to be upgraded (and we don't want to risk to lose the current infrastructure!), so we need to create a "parallel" Orion, configure it and then decommission the old one.

Other info needed?

Could you explain what you mean about "need to keep the original server running"?  I can think of several ways to interpret that statement.  It will affect the kind of advice you get.
