Alert for Data Collections Stopping?

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to monitor and alert in the event SNMP data-collections begin to fail on a node?

I recently had a failure where a node was up and responding to pings but SNMP data-collections were failing and I would like to be able to catch this type of event in the future.

Here are a couple of options for you:

1. NPM 10.1 is supposed to have included two new canned alerts that address this.
   
   Alert me when a managed node has not been polled during the last 5 tries
   Alert me when a managed node last poll time is 10 minutes old
   
   
2. Once in a while, when SNMP collections fail, the volumes and interfaces associated with the node go to unknown. Therefore, I created an alert based on that criteria.

You can see there's potential for false positives with option 2 but so far, it's been very accurate for me when SNMP no longer feeds stats for a node. I also created this alert before those canned alerts became available in 10.1.

I'm assuming those canned alerts are more accurate so I've enabled them in conjunction with my alert to test how it all works out.
