can anyone tell me the significance of the green icons in the left column and also why some machines don't list their ip address in the right column?
also, what does CPU SHARES percentage indicate?
thanks.
I'll take a shot in the dark and say it's because those VM's have SNMP enabled?
Exit my shot in the dark, I'll try and verify for you tomorrow.
Hi,
The green icons indicate that the VM is a managed Node in Orion as well as being a VM on this ESX server. Likewise, the IP address appears for those VMs since we know if from the Nodes table.
Clicking on the names of those VMs should take you to a Node Details page that will show you up at the top that this node is a Virtual Machine on ABC ESX Server. The name of the ESX server is a link to the ESX Server Details page.
Clicking on the names of the VMs that do not have a status icon beside them will ask you if you would like to manage these nodes in NPM and take you to the Add Node page if you answer yes.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Thanks
Karlo.Zatylny, can you explain what the CPU Shares is a percentage of?
Sorry I didn't respond to this question initially.
CPU shares is a term we re-use from VMware. They use this term to denote a ratio of the allocated CPU available to each VM. We take that ratio and calculate a percent.
This document has a decent explanation from VMware: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/VMware-vSphere-CPU-Sched-Perf.pdf There is a section in that doc called CPU Shares that shows how the ratio might be allocated between two machine on an 8 core host. The SolarWinds code is simply reading that ratio from the API and showing you the calculated percentage. The explanation starts on page 19.
Please let me know if that clarifies things.
Is there a way to run a report in report writer against this? It seems like VMWare is reporting the guest but Orion is telling us it's not monitored or managed. I'd like to try to get an automated report on this so we know if an added node is not being monitored.
Thanks.
