v7 upgrade nightmare

when i upgraded to NCM 7 yesterday it asked me if i wanted to integrate the database with orion. my thoughts, yay, down to 1 database! little did i know this was going to create the nightmare that it has for me. since i had quite a few devices in orion that used different ips for the same device in orion it added them as dupes to orion. no problem since i used custom node groups they were easy enough to identify and delete them. however, when i deleted the dupes from orion which also deleted them from NCM. this web integration is horrible. the stand alone consoles were infinitely better and i am now looking for a new solution once my maintenance expires. the road solarwinds seems to be going down is one i dont intend on following.

the gentleman i spoke with at the helpdesk was extremely nice. however, the only option he had for resolution was to submit a dev ticket and for me to manually add the devices back to NCM. this is not a solution to my problem.

Thank you for your post... I was going to just upgrade today and see what happens. I guess I ought to do a little more research and planning so I don't hit your issues. (Sorry you were the guinea pig, but thank you...)

If you have the time, can you share a little more detail?

What I am assuming is that NCM had one IP (the loopback?), but NPM had multiple IPs (? ), but not the loopback (?). It then created the loopback, which you don't need if you are monitoring all the interfaces.

Or, did it create duplicate nodes with the same IP?

Also, just out of curiosity, what piece is wrong about the direction they are going and what is missing from the web GUI? I thought the old integration was awful too, so I am really afraid of the new integration.

you are correct, i had the devices in orion by the loopback ip, and in cirrus by the interface id. when it integrated them it added duplicates into orion. when i removed them from orion it removed them from cirrus as well.

hindsight being 20/20 i now see why it acted the way it did when i removed the devices in orion. however, a quick "are you sure you want to remove XX devices from both orion and cirrus?" would have likely went a long way. it did finally prompt me to correct the ip addresses and i knew there were different ips in each, i just wanted to fix it on my time, not solarwinds!

other than this, the biggest way i see this affecting me is that i had multiple groups setup in orion based on the types (routers, switches, ASAs, etc) and all of these had different setups based on credentials. this is now all for naught. i can see the setup in the web interface but i cant find anything that allows me to configure the individual groups (it might be there, i just cant find it).

full disclosure: since solarwinds started the web integration i have not been a fan of it. this was the straw that broke the proverbial camels back for me. the stand alone consoles were simple to use, intuitive, and i didnt have to go to multiple pages or deal with the performance issues i have on the website (which are common to what i see others report here). maybe its because im more familiar with the consoles? i have been a solarwinds customer for over 10 years now.

cliffs notes: do NOT upgrade NCM unless you fully understand how it works, the differences, and want or need these differences, especially if you have a lot of customization in your existing setup!!!

I had large issues as well.

I run a server with an attached MSSQL database....I would typically install and run through the config wizard, where I would put in my NCM database and credentials.

With 7.0 it went through that, and then wanted me to enter the orion database??!? Am I missing something here?

I didn't even see that they removed the server console??? If that really is the case, that is the end of NCM for us.
