HP Proliant Server Custom Pollers

I have created some custom pollers for hardware state reporting but can also be used for Inventory reporting.

Array Controller

Model & Version (Useful if there is a known error with a certain firmware version, you can go onto create a custom report to identify all servers running with this version)

CPU Status

CPU Manufacturer, No of Cores, Speed, Socket & Current Status

Hard Drive

Bay Number, HDD Size, Speed, HDD Type (e.g. SATA, SCSI, SAS) Firmware version & Current Status

Memory

Slot & Current Status

Power Supply

Slot & Current Status, Type (e.g. Hot Pluggable or not), Redundancy (e.g. is the power supply redudant)

Network Interface Card

Description of Interface, MacAddress, Speed & Current Status

Temperature Monitoring

Sensor Location, Current temp, Threshold Temp (max temp it can reach before possible failure) & Current Status

I'm new to NPM. I've added this poller to a box but how do I see the data it is pulling out?

You need to add it to the view "Node Details"

Goto Admin / Manage Views / Node Details [Edit]

select the + to add a new resource and then choose "Node Detail Reports" select "Tabular Universal Device Poller"

Then open the Node you have assigned the UNDP to and you will see a new resource at the bottom you can then edit it to display the information you want.

If you goto the tutorials sections on Solarwinds Site there are some good tips for doing this.

I've added all pollers, but when I'm going to assign one of them to one of our servers and click the test button the result is always "No Such Name". This is happening with any poller in any server.

what version of smart start is the server running? I have found some of the pollers not to work on older servers running old version of smart start.

Looks like the Advanced alerts are available now, but not the poller anymore. Would it be possible to repost the poller or a combination.

Chris how do i import the Alerts i try it from the Manage Alerts but it did not work.

If you open Advanced Alerts, goto "New" and select the "Trigger Condition" & use the import option. You will need to configure the nodes, trigger actions / reset actions etc.

Great set of pollers. I have this working on a few older boxes, but I have (5) DL360 G5 servers running Ubuntu server, and can't get the information. I can see the SNMP info, but not the items in the custom pollers, although I do see the info for the pollers on a DL385 G1. Is there an HP specific agent that must be loaded on the server?

I have not tried these with anything other than windows, however if you goto the hp site there are hp snmp agents & templates that can be installed, I suspect these will give you what you need?

Not all servers are showing the value. Does it require something to be installed on the target servers or on the NPM? If it requires HP SNMP agent to be installed then what is the minimum version?

When I go through the Univeral Poller with these HP pollers, I keep getting the error that these MIBs can't be read. I have the latest MIB library from Solar Winds, but nothing seems to work. Am I missing something?

Hello,

I am trying to tie and advanced alert to Chris's HP pollers provided. I would like to get alerts similar to HP SIM (degraded HDD, Array card errors, power supply failure, etc.). Can someone please help me out with some sample HP centric hardware alerts. I would think that I could do these by OID but not sure how to configure the conditions to check in status change.

Erick, I have an advanced alert up for disk failures setup as follows: -

Vendor is equal to Windows
OID is equal to 1.3.6.1.4.1.232.3.2.5.1.1.6
Rate is greater than 2

basically 3 is the disk is good so anything other than 3 is either a failure or a predictive failure.

I then have a custom email alert that shows the disk status as follows: -

Disk Drive Failure on ${DateTime}
------------------------------

Server Name: ${NodeName}
IP Address: ${Node.IP_Address}
Operating System: ${Node.MachineType}
Last Reboot: ${Node.LastBoot}

HDD Drive Details
${CustomPollerStatus.RowID}

genesys - you need to make sure the server is setup for snmp if this is not already done you need to goto add / remove programs / add remove windows components. Management and Monitoring Tools / Details and check simple network management protocol.

You then need to goto services / snmp service and goto the security tab. Make sure you have a read community string set and that the option "accept snmp packets from any host"

Do you know if the server was built using smart start? It might be worth running the hp update pack from the hp site over it to make sure the mibs are installed.

What make / model / generation of hp servers are you struggling with and what OS are they running?

Just wondering if anyone still uses these pollers. I have tried implementing them and creating alerts for them in the latest Orion NPM, but am having difficulty in doing so.

Most of these would have been replaced by the built in hardware health features these days. Afew of the more granular ones like identifying specific module numbers might still have a use for reporting. In any case to get useful SNMP data from them the servers would need to have the HP Insight Management software running on them. What specific problems you were experiencing?

Long ago I took these, or similar, pollers and used them as a basis for creating my own set for HP Proliant servers. It really depends on what kind of data you want to gather for them, and if you're bored, just use the MIB browser to see what other interesting details you can get for them. Just this week I was updating my Proliant pollers to pull in the health stats of the hard drives after I had one fail.

I do use HP's System Insight Manager (SIM) to monitor the hardware as well, and it alerts me when things have problems, but there's a certain appeal to having that data also available in NPM.

I've installed the HP SIM software and have it manage/monitor a few machines but I found it terribly cumbersome to use and the documentation poor. Since I was more familiar with Orion I wanted to to try to see if I could utilize that instead.

I can try uploading my own Proliant custom poller. I see I can't do it here in my reply and I may need to start a new thread to do that. I haven't uploaded to this forum before so if you don't see anything, at least I tried.
