Upgrade and migrating orion to new server

Hi All

I'm looking at upgrading our existing orion platform to V8 (we are currently running version 7)

The current server is hosting SQL Server 2000 and runs on the same server as net perf mon.

What I'm looking to do is install 2 new servers;

1 running sql 2005 enterprise, the other will host orion net perf mon v8

I want to be able to migrate all the current node list over to the new server and use the existing database so we don't loose all our historic data.

Can anyone point me in the direction of any documentation that details how to do this ?

I should also state that we still want to keep the existing server runnin as it is now as a back-up device.

Any help would be appreciated as the admin guide doesn't cover this.

I just went through this, and it's pretty easy.

1) Build your new DB server
2) Copy your existing NetPerfMon DB to the new server (You have to stop the v7 engine while you do the copy)
3) Build your new Orion server
4) Install Orion v8 as directed. When the configuration wizard asks for the database server, point it to your new SQL box.

Your historical data will be available in the new version 8 instance. The version 8 configuration wizard will update the v7 database to v8 and all will be well.

This will leave you with 2 Orion systems running in parallel with 2 databases.

If you are looking for 100% availability, you need 2 polling engines running, and I'm not sure if you can run v7 and v8 on the same database. I would assume SW will require you to upgrade the version 7 instance to version 8 at some point. When your maintenance runs out at the latest...

There is a couple of steps you missed.

*Install New Servers
*Install SQL 2005 and Orion
*Stop NetProfMon
*Stop SQL
*Copy Databases over to new server
*Using 2005 Management Tools Attach the database
*Using Conf Wizard Point the Orion Database to the SQL Server

Thanks for the reply..

When you migrated Netperfmon to the new server in this way, did it copy over the node list too ?

We have hundreds of nodes in the polling engine at the moment, I don't want to have to re-enter all these if I can help it, I thought the database only contained the historic data not the node list.

Aaron, provide and alternative answer if you want!!

Yes, The Orion Database stores both Node Lists and Historical Data, so you should not have to enter all of your nodes again, and you will also have all of your historical data

hello steve,

One little kink in this upgrade scenario is the web interface. If you have created any custom resources, make sure you copy them to the new v8 box. Other than that the details listed by the other gents should serve you well.
