Monitor HSRP / VRRP interface

Can someonne point me in the right direction?
I am trying to determine the best method for monitoring and displaying on a map the HSRP / VRRP virtual address between 2 nodes.

I think you need to be more specific on what you're trying to achieve. On a HSRP standby group, ie: between two Ciscos, you can point Orion at the VIP that you are using for the standby group, and the ping will be indicative of the VIP but deeper SNMP polls are only going to get you the interface information of the active router in the standby group. That polling is problematic in that if the VIP fails over to it's partner the interfaces will go unavailable.

Scenario I use is to SNMP poll the individual routers directly for all their interface information, then add the VIP's as nodes with SNMP turned off just to get the uptime and latency numbers, which also then allows you also to alert on the VIP's. For deeper info on the actual interface statistics I just use the router metrics.

Best way to do it I've found, if someone has a better one I'd love to hear it myself!

I only use the HSRP/VVRP address to calculate availability & latency stats for the site & don't enable SNMP in Orion for this VIP.

Best practices are to use loopback IP's on your routers & monitor the loopback IP with ICMP & SNMP. If an interface goes down but the router is still up, chances are you can still get to the loopback IP through another interface. This assumes you are running a dynamic routing protocol & have some redundant links in your network.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
I already am using loopback interfaces on respective routers. I just did not have the VIP monitored via ping. And with propper syslogging I have created alerts for when the HSRP/VRRP standby changes to the primary.
