Work Breakdown structure for solarwinds Orion new setup

Hi Team,

I am the new project manager in XXX company and they have been assigned me a project for solarwinds.

Since we are building a new setup of Solarwinds orion Monitoring tool.

Can you guys help me or assist me in creating the WBS for implementing the project of solarwinds new setup.

Below are the requirements that are in request/suggested for the solarwinds project.

New VMs and 13 additional pollers at various places and these pollers has each HA pair.

1.NPM

2.NCM

3.SAM

4. Two database SQL servers

5.VNQM

6.Netflow Server

7. Five Web application servers which will be load balanced.

If you guys have any knowledge on this please let me know the content of Task that need to be placed in implementation phase.

Hi Sunny,

Sounds like a nice project, I’ll assume based on the volume that this will be a large deployment monitoring Nodes across multiple countries.

Firstly you will need to get the hardware provisioned, here is the SolarWinds guideline for deployments with multiple modules: Orion multi-module system guidelines - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support your deployment would most likely fall into the Large or Extra Large category.

Once you have the servers deployed you will need to ensure you have a DBA setup your SQL Cluster or AlwaysOn AG across the two Nodes, and push for SQL Server 2016 SP1 or better to ensure you can deploy the latest version of Netflow.

Try and get an idea of your NetFlow as it might need a dedicated SQL instance, or at least dedicated disk storage in your Cluster/AG.

You will also need to have the load balancer already deployed for your web servers as SolarWinds software doesn’t include that.

Then your pretty much ready to deploy the software, download the software from your customer portal and start with your main server by deploying NPM, NCM, SAM, NTA & VNQM (don’t panic this is a single install) then once the installation is finished the configuration wizard will setup the database information for Orion (NPM, SAM, NCM & VNQM) and NetFlow. Then it will create the Primary IIS Website (don’t forget to have a certificate ready if your planning on using HTTPS).

Then use the Scalability installer to deploy your Addiional Polling Engines and Additional Websites.

Once all of that is setup you can deploy and configure your HA servers and setup the Pools.

Then your ready to discover your network with a large scale fully resilient monitoring platform!
