Download config by Node Group?

Using the NCM web console, when I go to Config Management, and try to Download Config, I want to select one of the Node Groups I have created, but none are available.

Node group is just showing !Unknown" and when I expand, its simply a list of all the individual nodes. Are the groups under this view, not the same groups you can manually create from within the Home/Groups view?

Although I arrange nodes by their location (hub room/rack), I want to be able to group certain nodes in different racks together and be able to download configs for this group, but I dont seem to be able to do this.

Is it not actually possible to search for nodes that match specific requirements, then simply select them and download their configs??

Any suggestions?

Hi there sk3l3t0r,

The way I created my Node Groups is through the NCM program on the server itself (not on the web console). Rather than having "!Unknown" in the node group details, I like to group my network devices by Physical Location, so when I go to Config Management on the web console, I see this:

This list was created in the following way on the server (not web console).

Launch Solarwinds Network Configuration Manager on your NCM server.
Double click on a node (router, switch, firewall or whatever)
On the device details tab, under Node Group, name your group whatever you want (I have Atlanta in there for my network). it should look like this:

Then, REFRESH the Node List screen in the left navigation panel and you should see your new group name.

NOTE: If your left column does not have Node at the top, right click on the gray bar on the top of the list and select "Select Fields and Grouping...". In the small pop-up screen, use the dropdown at the top and Group the Routers/Switches by "Node Group". Click OK and your screen should look just like mine.

Seems daft to me that the Node Group you can create in the NCM Web Console is different from the the Node Group within the Server Console!

Thank you for contacting SolarWinds Support. My name is Andrew. I will be assisting you with this case.
When creating groups from the Home tab, these are groups that are being created using nodes that are in the Orion Core database. In order to use the groups the way you want to, you will need to create those groups inside the NCM database.
There are two ways to do this:
1) Open the NCM application on the server, manually select all the nodes in question, right click and select edit multiple nodes. From here you can set each of these nodes to be in a group that the NCM database will honor.
2) Open the Web console, Go to Settings->NCM Settings->Add or Manage Nodes. From this view you can select multiple nodes, and then Edit Properties. You can scroll down to the NCM Properties section, check the box under Node Details, and then enter those devices to the name of the group you wish to put them in. Then just click submit at the bottom of the page.
Either method should create the groups you want to use.

Why have multiple databases for the same resources! Surely the point of a database is you just have one, and share the contents via multiple interfaces/views, but then what do I know!

We also use Location to group the devices, but do this using the SNMP Server Location info on the switch.

Hi,

The reason why we have two databases (Core and NCM) is historical. Moving to one db is definitely something we are seriously considering. However it's a substantial change in the product.

This is a major flaw for us and would be great if it could be resolved ASAP. Manually adding nodes one by one is not practical. I have used the Orion dynamic group generation tools and they work great. I need to be able to use those groups to then apply scripts and configs! Please sort this out ASAP.

I don't think there has been any further development on this feature. I can create dynamic groups (Home -> Groups), but those groups don't appear when running a config template (Configs -> Config Change Template). Its quite astonishing, what's the point of creating dynamic groups if we can't reference them in scripts/templates for batch processing. The method described by sk3I3t0r is ok, but the process is quite manual and you can only have a node in one group with that process. If we have hundreds of routers (e.g.) we still want them in a main 'Router' group (Node Properties). But we still want to be able to group a subset of those routers (with dynamic grouping) for batch configuration changes etc.
