Hi again all,
3.0 implements Automatic Application Discovery. Don't worry - it didn't kick off automatically when you upgraded to 3.0, but it's there if you want to take advantage of it. Application discovery is a powerful new way to add application monitoring and I have a couple of tips I have found:
- Walk before you run - try one or two servers first and then add more as you get a feel for the discovery time and applicability of the template you are using. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, this gives you a chance to test the template and clean it up for your environment before you apply it to a bunch of devices. This way when you do apply it to multiple servers you don't have a clean up each one individually. Secondly, discovery of many servers can take a while and will go faster if you apply a clean template first.
- Once discovery is started go to the APM summary page and click on the scan progress link. Here you will be able to see what is being added and any discovery failures. If you have some successful assignments but want to cancel the scan to clean up a few errors the successful assignments will be saved and monitored.
Hope this helps!
Andy
