Configuration "change" report messed up by "--More--"

Hello all!

I'm wondering if someone can help me out with a little problem I'm having with the configuration change report. Certain devices, namely IGESM (blade chassis switches) come up as being changed when no changes have taken place.

The only clue I have is this...

The first line of the "Before" shows "--More--" ... and then the rest of the lines show the entire config from that point.

In other words, because of the "--More--" the config change report seems to think that what should be on "line 6" of the config is now on "line 7" and has changed.

For reference this is the device type: cisco 371098-001
And it is also interesting to note that I have a bunch of these devices and they don't all behave this way.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Do the following commands work your device?

terminal length 0

terminal width 0

the above commands are used by NCM in most of the Cisco templates to disable the ---more--- prompts before to display the configuration to avoid recording them.

Once you have disabled the ---more--- prompts NCM should stop doing false positives.

The device template you use can be configured to enter any commands to disable the ---more- prompts and re-enabled them before to disconnect from the device.

How do you figure out what "template" is used by a device and how to edit that template?

Open NCM Configuration Manager

Right-Click on the device and select Edit Selected Node...

In the Device Details tab, scroll down to the Communication section.

Check to what is set Device Command Template setting.

If this is set to Auto Determine, we will have to do some "NCM guessing/mind reading" or use the session trace.

Guessing

Scroll up and check the System OID in the Discovered Properties section.

Open the \Program Files\Solarwinds\Configuration Management\DeviceTypes folder.

Review the existing templates and find the one that has the closest System OID compare to your device.

If your system OID is e.g. : 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.516

and you have e.g. three templates: 1.3.6.1.4.9.1.648, 1.3.6.1.4.1.9 and 1.3.6.1.4.1.56.45

the second one will be chosed by NCM because it is the most specific. The first one is too specific and made for another specific device. The third one is not matching at all.

Session Trace

Click on File > Settings.

Scroll down to Session Tracing.

Select "Turn on Session Tracing" and click on Ok

Try to download the configuration.

Open the \Program Files\Solarwinds\Configuration Management\Session-Trace folder.

Edit the session trace that has just been created for your device.

You should see a line at the top of the file such as:

[20/02/2009 15:13:13] Device Template: Cisco IOS-1.3.6.1.4.1.9.ConfigMgmt-Commands

The second method is more reliable but the first one is sometimes faster.
