Best way to monitor SQL instances separately?

Hello,

new to SAM - have a quick question I seem to be missing the answer to (I have a feeling it's somewhere in these forums, but perhaps my search syntax is just not there yet).

Monitoring sqlserver.exe process on a server with four instances via SNMP (see attached screenshot).

What's the best method to break these instances out to be monitored separately?

When you have separate instances there are separate process names. If you look at the list of running processes for SQL you will find that for each instance you should see a process named similar to this MSSQL$Instance1 MSSQL$Instance2 etc. These are the processes tied directly to the instance. If it is just the MSSQLServer that implies a default instance.

Running instances of sql server (sqlserver.exe processes) can be distinguished by command line which usually contains instance name.

You can use "Command Line Filter" parameter of SNMP process monitor to collect data (memory and cpu) only for selected instance:

Recently virtualized our SQL box successfully. Ever since, the command line filter for our component monitor of the sqlservr.exe process does not function as before on two instances, but is fine on two others. The difference that I see is that the still-functional component monitors are talking to SQL2005 instances and the non-functional monitors are attempting to poll SQL2008/2008R2 instances.

Anyone encountered anything like this before?

If you launch the Real-Time Process Explorer you can see the command line options specified, which should include the instance name. Have you validated/verified these have not changed in any way for your SQL 2008/2008R2 instances?

Yes, I have. They are identical. I've opened a case as well...hopefully I can get this resolved. It's very strange.

So on the same server (physical or virtual) you have multiple SQL instances running with the same command line options? Is the instance name not part of the command line switches for your SQL 2008/2008R2 instances? Can you post of a screenshot of this in the Real-Time Process Explorer?
