I have done extensive research and contacted SolarWinds on this issue. I wanted to at least state my findings and hope that someone in the community had an answer to prove me wrong.
We are monitoring a server in another location over the Internet. There are firewalls that we have to go through to get to the server (as you can imagine.)
Apparently, WMI uses a random high port to communicate between servers. On 2008, this high port can be set. I have tried using the same settings to assign the high port on the 2003 server and it doesn't work. SolarWinds doesn't know how to assign the high port to 2003 and from my reading, it isn't possible to assign a high port to 2003.
Has anyone done this? I don't want to open ~64,000 ports between my servers to get this work correctly. A tunnel isn't an option.
