Watch It! Question

It appears that Watch It! uses ping to monitor the designated devices. How does this differ from the Ping function? In our situation, the Watch It! panel shows a number of devices to be down. Pinging the devices from Watch It! results in a time out. However, pinging the same device from the Ping tool, shows the device to be responsive. What is the difference?
