How Do I Apply A Template to a Group

I have created several groups, and have several templates, what I can't figure out is how to apply a template to a group. Example: I have a web server group called 'Web Servers' (catchy name right?), and I have a template that I would like to apply to the entire group, but all I see is to add it to a node. Any help here would be appreciated.

Groups were not designed with node organization in mind, but rather for dynamic grouping with dependencies for alerting and reporting purposes. What I believe you're looking for are custom properties, which are intended primarily for organization and access restriction/view limitations. Custom properties are available when selecting which nodes to apply an application to. By default three custom properties exist out of the box for "Department", "City" and "Comments". Additional Custom Properties can be created using the Custom Property Editor.

When you select a custom property from the list, such as "Department" you can select a department you want and apply the application template to all servers designated as being in that department.

Thanks for the prompt response, hopefully this will get me to where I need to be.

Hopefully in a future release will include the ability to create a dynamic query and then have a template automatically applied to the group. (for instance) For web servers, any server with the letters WEB in the name, will fall into the WEB group, and then because they're in that group, they will then receive the template for being in that group.

Out of curiosity how would you expect this to function? If the group is dynamic would you want only the nodes that are currently in the group to have the application template applied, or would you need the template applied and removed automatically as nodes are added and removed from the group dynamically?

Yes. Say we have a weekly scan of an IP segment, and it finds 4 servers, 2 WEB, 1 MON, 1 IVR. So, APM pulls them in, sees that there are two new servers with 'WEB' in the name and pulls them into the group WEB. And because there is a template for that group, it would apply that template to the 2 new servers. So now all of the new web servers have the template we want for all web servers. Also, I can add one of the new web servers to another group, 'Web Set 6' and there is a template on that group, because that group host specific websites that are similar.

And just so you know, we just started using this product this week, this functionality could already be there, I've just not found it.
