Alerting & "Unable to complete transform"

I've got an SNMP-based device I'm polling to read temperatures in my datacentre. 99% of the time it works fine, but occasionally it appears (though I'm not certain) that the snmp query fails and I get the following page from Orion NPM:

monitor151-712-1 AC1 temperature high: Unable to complete transform. Assign poller 'tempAC1' to this node. C

A few minutes later I'll receive the following page:

monitor151-712-1 AC1 temperature normal: 16.7 C

Basically, I need a way to be able to either fix it so snmp queries are no longer failing, or at least silently ignore them so my guys aren't getting paged at 3am with false positives. Does anyone have any ideas?

Is this happening because the poller is waiting too long for an SNMP response from the device or is the poller too busy to complete the transformation during that polling cycle?

I don't know why it's happening, I'm just speculating at this point. If someone could point me in the right direction to troubleshoot this, I'd appreciate it.

I don't have a suggestion that will directly troubleshoot this but instead a more roundabout method. You could adjust the polling interval for this particular node to see if that helps. You could also adjust the timeout values but unfortunately, it's a global value that would affect all nodes.

It's probably safe to assume that the original value that is being transformed is also having the same SNMP issues?

I also assume that your alert is defined to trigger when the temperature rises above a specific threshold? Have you considered adding another condition to the alert such that it triggers when the temperature is above X and below Y?

I previously tried setting a high threshold as well, and it completely broke alerting. I've tried another way of doing it, so we'll see how this pans out.

I'd like to be able to determine the underlying cause so I can fix the problem rather than work around it.

I Started recieving this same error Unable to complete transform. See KB article 4779 for possible reasons. After reading the artical it just didnt seem to fit. I'm using snmpv3 so I went into the object edit node screen to test and verify that Orion could connect via SNMP and it was failing. I ended up changing the settings on the device and orion from AES to DES to get SNMP v3 working again. I was still recieving the error. Using the engineers toolset Mib walker I was and UnDP I verified that it was connecting and performing the tranform. Thought it was fixed right up to the point of another alert ;-) Dammit!

Went back in to UnDP and found that the Poller that the Transform depends on was not assigned to the device. The Transform was but not the actuall poller. I actually think I got it this time.
