160Tbps on 1Gbps interface - bad Min/Max/Average bps In/Out data with Cisco

Hello,

On a 1,000Mbps interface we recently saw Solarwinds report 160,000,000Mbps utilization.

We are getting bad data in Solarwinds when Cisco devices (7600s with SRD3 code) respond to Solarwinds with the wrong OID (not the requested OID) and Solarwinds does the math on this without validating the OID or the interface bandwidth. I'm sure Solarwinds should be smart enough to catch this via either an OID validation or a simple interface max bandwidth calculation but I am not sure how to get this fixed. I know the problem's source is the Cisco box reporting the wrong OID to the query, but I expect more from an NMS to recognize this. We have other open source NMS' deployed and none of them exhibit this issue for the same OID and device(s).

P.S. The interface is setup with 64-bit counters and interface bandwidth is set to 1000Mbps.

Here is the final answer from Solarwinds Support. While disappointing I hope we are able to see a patch available to fix this problem soon:

"I can open a feature request with our developers to put this in consideration for a future release. As this is not something the software currently does, this is seen as an enhancement to the product. I cannot gaurantee when or if we will see this request in place in the future. I will close this case out and open the request with development. To find out if the enhancement has been added, you will need to check the release notes of future versions of Orion.

sorry but if the cisco box reports wrong its not the NMSs fault, I recommend using an IOS where its fixed. we have some devices where the utilization sometimes is at 120% but its perfectly normal so how would the NMS know when to cap? and also if it just caps the value, what sense would that make? its altered data that you wouldnt be able to use anyhow

I would argue that any NMS should be intelligent enough to know that 160Tbps is not valid on a 1Gbps interface. Zenoss and Nagios are smart enough to do that. And they are free. Should Solarwinds not also be as smart? This step (validate OID or interface bandwidth) should be a second check by the NMS to keep systems that are mis-reporting in-line. So yes, this is Cisco's fault. And yes, Solarwinds NMS should be smart enough to know better. P.S. I have a case open with Cisco too on this. And I expect both companies to fix the problem.

So far we have been told that Solarwinds NMS does no validation of the data, rather just the math to calculate a number. I haven't given up yet as this is such a critical issue for us skewing the data and charts to the point of being unusable. I will post the final results from the Solarwinds support desk when they are available.
