Question

Dear Team,

We are building HA over WAN for SolarWinds Modules. We have created the Pool and the System is working fine. However, System Team is planning to revoke the permission given to the SolarWinds User. Hence, we would request you for your opinion for the below scenario:

a) 2 Records are made in the DNS Zone with IPs of Primary and Secondary Server

b) SolarWinds to identify the Active Servers and re-direct the request to that IP.

We are using latest versions of Application. If any of you have any similar situation and let us have your comments.

I haven't tried this out before, but an F5 can monitor services with their health checks and i believe you can do your forwarding rules based on those.  In a failover event Solarwinds downs most the services on the server and starts them up on the HA backup.  In theory you might be able to do a bit of a DIY redirection if you set up a check for those services in F5.  I can only begin to guess what other things might go wrong under this scenario but that may give you a starting point to your experiment.

There is no redundancy that an F5 can assist with,as the website is not active on both systems at the same time. Services are down on Secondary Member until such time a failover occurs. At this point, the HA may not even be active if you can no configure the DNS portion for the HA (WAN) Pool. I usually see F5s used when there are multiple Additional Web Engines (AWEs) running and the F5 is used for load balancing and site failures.

Dear Derik

Thank you for your response. The System Team has some Audit Constraints and hence they revoke. We are having F5 Load Balancer. Is there any means we could use the same in this scenario. We will add both the IP Addresses to F5 and it will pass the request only to the active nodes.
