My first alerts

Hello !

I've setup the APM template to monitor Hyper-V server and their virtual machines (see post at  ). Now I'd like to setup alerts for when VMs are turned off.

I went into Advanced Alert Manager on the Orion server, and created a new alert called Alert me when a VM goes down.

The trigger condition is as follows :

Type of Property to Monitor : APM: Component

Trigger Alert when all of the following apply

    Node Name is equal to (the name of our Hyper-V server)

    Application Name is equal to Hyper-V

    Component Name is equal to (the name of the "Windows Script Monitor" component I created for a specific VM)

    Component Status is equal to Critical

I also created a Send E-mail action with the following message

    ${AlertTriggerTime} : ${ComponentName} is ${ComponentStatus}

 

This really does not work. When I test the alert, I'm getting a message about Windows Event Log services being up, where I'm expecting to see the name of our VM being Off or disabled !!!

What have I done wrong ???

The Test alert feature only tests the alert actions, not the alert logic (the trigger, reset, or suppression conditions). 

It allows you to choose from nodes, interfaces or volumes, so its not possible to specify exactly which APM application or component to pull the information for the alert action on - this is why you're seeing it for another component - probably the first component assigned to that selected node.

The easiest way to test the logic of an application or component alert is to change the logic very slightly so that you know it should trigger -  for example, use "component status is equal to Up" instead. Once you're happy with the results, change the logic back to what you require.
