Applications not visible from Orion System Manager (only from website)

Hello everyone...

I've just installed a 2 new servers, 1 application server running Windows 2003 SP2 and Orion 9, and another server running Windows 2003 SP2 and SQL2005. I installed the Orion Application Monitor v2.0 on the Orion Server. I am able to log into the Orion website and see the "Application Monitor" link and I have set up two application monitors...1 orion app monitor and 1 SQL2005 WMI monitor. Both monitors work perfectly (though I did have to run "wmiadap /f" on the database server to get the WMI pollers to recognize).

The problem is this...

I am not able to log into the Orion server (via remote desktop) and see the "Application" listed under the Orion-Server node in the Orion system manager...
In other words, I am able to view the application monitor through the website but not through the Orion System Manager (windows application).

What's up with that? The previous version of Orion shows the applications in the System manager app.

I'd prefer to be able to see it in both places. Can someone help me with this?

Applications were listed in System Manager in the legacy Application Monitor. The new Application Performance Monitor (released early this year) is completely web-based. As far as I know, APM never listed applications in the System Manager. I believe SolarWinds is slowly moving to a platform where Orion will be completely web-managed application. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing is a matter of opinion but as it is right now, you will not see applications listed in System Manager.

Thank you for the reply. I suspected that the behavior was by design -and I really appreciate the confirmation of that. One would think they would at least present the user with a choice.

One might think that, but providing that kind of choice is not free. We feel it's more important to deliver a wide variety of functionality through a web UI rather than deliver a smaller set of functionality that provides the choice of a web UI or a Windows UI. To have both, we have to build it twice.And the vast majority of our customers (although there are always some dissenters) favor the web UI.

Eventually, all system manager functionality will be available in the web console, at which point, we'll discontinue system manager. I don't know when that point will be, except to say that System Manager will still be available in the next release. Beyond that, it could go either way.
