Uninitiated to the SDK

For those, like me, that have never dabbled in creating scripts or interrogating API's, etc, etc can someone possibly give me a brief 'how to get started'?

Looking for a FAQ, probably, that details stuff like:

- what to download

- where to install it

- how to fire it up

- getting started with it....
