Group based alerting

Hello,

We are monitoring approximately 1600 nodes and have set up custom properties to group each node by its site (roughly 5-10 nodes per site). I am looking to try and set up an alert so if multiple nodes at that site go down, I only get the one alert for that group, instead of an alert for each node at the site.

Trying to minimize the alerts created every time a site fully goes down or just multiple nodes go down at the site.

Did you create actual groups (Settings > Manage Groups); or are you using your custom properties to create groups visually in the dashboard?

The easiest way to achieve what you're looking for is by alerting at the group level so that the alert threshold is the status of the group object, which is an aggregate of ALL the group members.

If you are more worried about things like a router going down and then losing access to every node behind it, so you end up with an alert storm for a site, you're going to want to look into using Dependencies.

I have created both. Groups within (Settings > Manage Groups) and grouped from custom properties as well for testing. Yes, that is what I am trying to avoid is an alert storm. So like you said when a router goes down it doesn't create a storm for all other devices.

Once I have created the dependencies for each site, how would I go about alerting for them? Or would I even need to set up a separate alert?

We have similar scenario, but dependencies doesnot work for us for following reasons

1. almost everything is redundant at sites, redundant headend routers/circuits etc, whole site goes down only in case of power outages.

2. even if we figure and enable dependency somehow, there is now way to list child devices in same alert ( atleast i didnot found, neither tech support could tell)

3. we tried groups, group based alerts work fine as it should, if everything in group goes down it triggers group down alert, but it also triggers individual node down alerts for all nodes in that group.
