Applications entering an unknown state

We have APM 2.5 installed and throughout the day our app monitors (not all at once, maybe a couple at a time) will enter an "unknown" state. When this happens, I can remote desktop the server and everything appears to be fine. About five minutes later, they are back to reporting as normal. Has anyone else seen this issue with APM? Any help would be appreciated.

There are some specific changes in APM 3.0 to address such scenarios. Please try that and see if it works better for you.

Hi,

This was also happening on our APM 2.5. We upgraded to APM 3 about a week ago but it was still happening. I thought it may have been due to the poller being overworked so tonight we spread the load accross some of our additional pollers.

Unfortunatly I am still seeing the issue. There does not seem to be any obivous pattern to which app monitor goes into the "unknown" state. I have 2 app monitors applied to 275 servers (basically just monitoring the snmp process on windows and unix servers)

I am hoping to increase this to approx 6 or 7 processes per server using approx 60 different app monitors but I am worried that APM will not be able to cope if it is already having issues.

Are you monitoring a lot of different nodes? Is your poller running close to capacity?

Is anyone else successfully using APM to monitor a large amount of processes and not seeing this problem.

I just upgraded our APM to version 3.0. I also applied Hotfix 1 to it. We will see how that works for us.

To answer your question, we are currently monitoring less than 100 nodes, with most servers only have one or two application monitors tied to it.

We had the issue as well in 2.5, we are on 3 and we still get it just not quite as bad.

Have you opened a ticket? We made a change in 3.0 for this, so if you're still seeing this, it's probably a different root cause, and we would want to get that fixed.

We are now experiencing this problem at a much higher rate than before. As I previously mentioned, we are running APM 3.0 with hotfix 1. We currently have 101 app monitors working, and as I type this post 46 of them are up, 1 is a warning, 5 are down, and 49 are unknown. These numbers have been fluctuating for the last few hours. I'm not too concerned with the warnings or the downs, because those can be remedied with some tinkering.

However, the unknowns are not giving me much confidence in this monitoring solution. Is this something that I need to open a ticket on, or is it normal for servers to go unknown throughout the day? As of now, we are not utilizing APM for alerting, as we are still working on implementing APM into our environment. But once we start alerting, this is going to fill our mailboxes with alerts about servers going unknown every 20 minutes.
